“People Try “Superfoods” For The First Time” Reaction

Here’s what I think:

Although this humorous video from Buzzfeed captures what MOST people would think superfoods are, it fails to capture what superfoods REALLY are. People perceive superfoods to be something slimy, gritty, tasteless or disgusting, but this could not be further from the truth. You can see superfoods and their benefits in many forms such as:

  • Raw (vegetable,fruits, nuts, etc)
  • Beverage (Tea, smoothie, juice)
  • Supplement form
  • Additions (Nuts on a salad, Turmeric in a smoothie, Garlic in pasta sauce)

There are many options that suddenly make superfoods a little less daunting no?

So there’s no real thing as a superfood, but there’s a lot of foods out there that pack a nutritional punch. – Margaret Parus

This sentence made me cringe because it’s incredibly contradictory in itself. The definition of superfoods is LITERALLY:

Superfood: a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.

I think this nutritionist has fallen into the trap of what people perceive as superfoods versus what superfoods actually are. People believe that superfoods are food that will cure their disease, reduce their weight, and prolong their life all from making one simple diet change.

While there are definitely benefits that encourage these misconceptions, you cannot achieve maximum results without life changing action to go along with it. You need to be able to mix a variety of healthy foods into your diet as well as be able to live a healthy and active lifestyle. There is no one food that will help you with anything if you do not take action in your life!

Again, the nutritionist Margaret Parus seems to have a misconceived idea of what superfoods actually are. Think of it like this:

Kale has a very long list of health benefits which you can read about in our other blog post. When you compare hamburgers and french fries to something like kale, you will see that kale not only has a higher nutritional value, it has no drawbacks to eating it compared to burgers and french fries. That is an example of a superfood, when the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

Let’s Talk About the Foods They Ate

  • Cacao Nibs
  • Tiger Nuts
  • Mulberries
  • Bee Pollen
  • Chlorella

While we can’t deny the health benefits of the foods shown, I can honestly say I have not heard of most of the foods on this list. Apparently foods such as pumpkin seeds, turmeric, and common fruits were totally passed over.

I understand the need to use these complicated superfoods as common superfoods would take away from the ridiculousness of the video. To be a superfood you don’t have to have a fancy name, be exotic, or be complicated, you simply just need to be packed with the right nutrition.

On a Final Note

The video is concluded instructing us to incorporate these foods into your diet slowly in whatever way you find best… great advice! However, if none of the foods that were shown are to your taste, consider incorporating our list of foods you can easily incorporate into every day meals:

Top 20 List of Superfoods

  1. Cloves
  2. Bran
  3. Cinnamon
  4. Oregano
  5. Turmeric
  6. Acai Berries
  7. Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  8. Cumin
  9. Parsley
  10. Curry
  11. Mustard
  12. Ginger
  13. Pepper
  14. Chili Powder
  15. Dark Chocolate
  16. Pecans
  17. Paprika
  18. Peppermint
  19. Cranberries
  20. Pears

I think you might recognize a few of these names just for starters, I could give you 100 superfoods to try but I think by now you understand the idea that superfoods are not as complicated or gross as people make them out to be. The best part of my top 20 list is that literally every one of these foods you can incorporate into delicious things you might already make at home.

I’m nice like that.

If You Take One Thing From This…

Let it be this:

  1. You cannot see results on a single superfood alone, you need to take action in your lifestyle.
  2. Don’t stress or worry about getting bee pollen, mulberries, or any other complicated superfood. Focus on the superfoods you can buy at the store and slowly incorporate them into your diet whenever you can.
